This car suffered from rod bearing failure on the #1 cylinder. The failure damaged the crank shaft and rod. This was not a simple rebuild. Many custom parts were needed to get it back together to make a reliable engine that would not suffer the same fate as the original. Many of the factory parts are not available in serviceable sizes and at extreme cost for what they are.
This build included:
- updating to the new style oil pump, which is all that is available now. This required some custom work on the block, cradle and one timing chain guide.
- Custom main bearings were installed, required extensive machine work to the lower cradle and align boring.
- ARP fasteners were used for all main and rod bearings.
- A full valve grind was done to the head.
- New rings, gaskets and seals were installed.
- All timing chains and components updated to the latest revisions, as there are many.
I learned a lot about these engines on this build. This was the Jaguar 4.0 supercharged v8, the 4.2 and 4.6 and Ford 3.9 are all very similar engines, based on this platform. Maserati also used a version of this engine.
Here are more photos of the build.
